“Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know.”

Recently I’ve been playing a couple of emulators and you just can’t beat some of the classics. I started playing computer games around 6 or 7 years old. There was a time when I was playing more hours than my normal working day, which is some serious hours.

Respect to who ever can tell the difference between Bub and Bob from Bubble BBBobble; now that’s one serious classic game.

Fuck it; here are some of the games that are in a completely different league even with today’s standards:

Fighting: Street Fighter (Third Strike was a personal favourite, regardless they were all incredible).

First-person shooter: Half-Life (Although Half-Life 2 is fantastic you can’t beat mods such as TFC, Jesus that brings back memories).

Role-Playing: Shenmue (Without a doubt this was and will always be in a league of its own. A uncompleted master piece; Ryo Hazuki must have his revenge).

Massively Multiplayer Online Games: Ultima Online (I know there are games out there such as World of War Craft, but graphics aren’t everything and look how the Ultima series developed).

Simulators: Anything but The Sims (I personally can’t think of a simulator that has been good enough to stick in my mind).

Military: Operation FlashPoint (Where the fuck did this game go, this was the daddy and we are talking well before the BattleField series. I salute the classic Wolfenstein 3D as well).

Strategy: X-Com: Enemy Unknown (I can’t even go in to depth on this game because how addictive this game was. This is the first game I took real pride in completing. It took one whole summer holiday but it was the best 6 weeks I’ve ever invested. There were a few other classic X-Com games but nothing could compare to the first).

Adult: Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards (If you haven’t played this classic you don’t know what you are missing and please don’t relate it to that shit Xbox title).

Platform: Sonic The HedgeHog (If you don’t know this game, you shouldn’t have even read this far)Puzzle: Lemmings (You don’t need graphics to make a addictive game) Survival horror: Silent Hill (This is a philological horror, so they wont make you jump but they will show you images you don’t want to see. I’m a huge fan of horrors but this game scares the living shit out of me) I know I have missed out a few genres but I don’t care because this is about 1% of some of the most inspirational games of all time. Nowadays we just get fed crap and I personally blame the big companies such as EA Sports Shits in the game.
